What is the Lymphatic System?
The Lymphatic System is a complex network of lymphoid organs, lymph nodes, lymph ducts and lymph vessels that produce and transport lymph fluid from tissues to the circulatory system. The lymphatic system is a major component of the immune system.
The Lymphatic System has three interrelated functions: 1) removal of excess fluids from body tissues 2) absorption of fatty acids and subsequent transport of fat and chyle to the circulatory system and 3) production of immune cells (such as lymphocytes, monocytes, and antibody producing cells called plasma cells).
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage or Lymph Massage?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a technique used to help increase the lymph flow. Increased lymph flow removes harmful substances (toxins, viruses, bacteria) from the tissues by cleansing and filtering the lymph fluid and increases immune functions. Performing lymphatic massage correctly can stimulate the opening of the initial lymphatic and increase the volume of lymph flow by as much as 20 times!
Lymphatic Massage utilizes a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. Immune system function can be significantly increased, improving metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins.
What are the benefits of Lymphatic Drainage/Massage?
Because the lymph cleanses nearly every cell in your body, the positive effects of increasing the lymph flow can help with the following conditions:
